Keys to Fasting and embracing the power of discipline in 2009

Last night we had a very powerful Friday 'After Work' service. We prayed together for 90 minutes and many people made commitment to start their year by partaking in a corp. 'Daniel Fast'' * as well as committing themselves to fast multiple times every month and we had tow new guest as well!

I taught a message entitled Keys to Fasting here are some of the keys (not in order)

Key #1 God is calling his body back to basics- back to the principles of self-denial and repentance

  • The word fast in Hebrew is “sum”  and it means to “to abstain from”.
  • Fasting increase our strength in the area of self denial and delayed gratification.
  • Repentance precedes revival
  • The principles  of self denial, self discipline and being devoted coupled with wisdom, proper information and strong relationships will strengthen our chances to be successful in all areas

Key #6 Fasting increases our spiritual ruggedness and a spirit of discipline

  • Matt 11:12 says The violent will take it be force...We need forceful discipline christians
  • Military special forces eat just enough to literally live to during training...The Spartans fasted often to develop mental toughness
  • It will keep us in a training mode
  • Systematic fasting increases your boldness...the bible says 'The righteous will be as bold as lions'
  • Lose of body fat will make us healthier for the call and more magnetic in our message

Key#9 To Fast is to delight yourself in the Lord

  • Psalms 37:4 Delight yourself also in the LORD, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

Key #10 Fasting increases our spiritual power

  • Matt 7:21 However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting."

Here is a poem from Deborah Jordan

Prayer and Fasting are spiritual keys

To break the bands of captivity

To unlock the resources of liberty

And open one ear’s to God strategies!

Prayer and Fasting afflict the soul

Removes hesitation and makes one bold

To proclaim truth which is valued as gold;

To strengthen one’s faith and instill self control…

Prayer and fasting are channels of power

Released against those that attempt to devour

The blessings of God through fruit that is sour

Yet over each lie in his word do we tower…

Prayer and fasting are weapons of war

To defeat Satan’s conspirators

To become God’s chosen progenitors and become his heir and inheritors

I hope you too dedicate this year to be more disciplined and exercise more self control in your efforts to accomplish all your goals in 2009.
You only have one life make the most of it!
Here is an inspiring quote
"O God, to have reached the point of death only to find I have never lived at all"

Becoming a discipline person  with a vision will help you change your self image

    Pastor Ed,

I am so glad you wrote an edited version of your sermon, this past Friday night. I was not able to be in service this past Friday night, so getting the meat of your sermon on fasting, was truly a blessing. As you well know, RHOW, SIHOW, NBT and most churches worldwide, are also doing the Daniel's Fast. So anything and everything that I can read or tools to help me through, is an added blessing. Love you much, see you on Sunday morning. God Bless.
